The Career of an Appeals Officer

In the position of IRS Appeals Officer, you'll conduct conferences to settle cases in which taxpayers have appealed IRS determinations on their tax case, or filed a petition in U.S. Tax Court. An Appeals Officer position is within the Appeals Division and the Job Series number is 0930. The Appeals Division hires at the GS-11 to GS-15levels. Your responsibilities will include providing effective neutral assistance as a mediator between the IRS and the taxpayer, and you'll have the authority to arrive at the final disposition of the case from the Government's perspective — and to approve the final settlement.
