Being an IRS Revenue Agent offers a unique blend of challenges and opportunities. With positions ranging from entry level to management, this role requires a strong understanding of accounting principles and tax law to ensure compliance and equity in tax collection. The interaction with different taxpayers, from individuals to large corporations, provides a dynamic work environment and requires excellent communication and problem-solving skills.
As a Revenue Agent, you will use your skills in accounting to plan and conduct examinations or make determinations on various federal tax matters. These examinations may be performed in the field or in a centralized office setting,working with taxpayers, their representatives, certified public accountants, and taxattorneys. Your duties will vary based on the area you are assigned. Your cases may involve income, profits, estate, gift, excise and employment taxes for individual, corporation, partnership, trust, tax exempt and government entity returns.

Entry to Mid-Career
(Grades 5 - 12)
Our entry to mid-career level roles allow you to join our team right out of college with an accounting degree or CPA. With the addition of accounting experience, you may be able to join us at a higher mid-career level.
Experienced Accountant
(Grade 13)
Our experienced accountant roles are available with various business divisions, focusing on more advanced cases, allowing you to use your accounting skills on more complicated areas of tax law and for larger entities.
Senior Level Accountant
(Grade 14)
Our senior level accountants typically have highly specialized skills and focus their attention on our most advanced cases, in areas including international tax law, pass- through entities, treaty and transfer pricing, and global high-wealth, to name a few.

-- Lauren, Supervisory Revenue Agent
Lauren began her career as an Internal Revenue Agent at the GS-07 entry-level and worked in various specialty areas until she ultimately advanced to the GS-13 Revenue Agent position in the Large Case Employment Tax Division. Interested in pursuing a leadership role, Lauren participated in the Frontline Leader Readiness Program (FLRP) and was later selected as a Supervisory Revenue Agent.
Lauren enjoys the flexible work schedules and the work-life balance a career with the IRS offers. She also enjoys passing on her expertise and knowledge by serving as a classroom instructor, teaching new examiners. When asked what keeps her at the IRS, she said:
“The variety of the issues we examine keep me interested and engaged, as I continue to learn every day – and the people I work with, they offer so much support and are great resources.”
