IRS Criminal Investigation (CI) benefits from a robust and diverse workforce. Our Special Agents (SA) receive crucial support from employees in diverse roles, ensuring the seamless progress of their investigative efforts. With over 950 personnel, nearly a third of CI's workforce is dedicated to offering support and expertise to fulfill CI's crucial mission of deterrence. These roles primarily fall into three distinct categories: Investigative, Administrative, and Technical Staff, seamlessly integrated across all aspects of CI operations. Each of these professional categories plays a vital role in advancing both the Enterprise IRS and CI missions.
The contributions of our investigative professional staff are indispensable to driving CI's law enforcement initiatives forward. These professionals are omnipresent, whether on the frontline of casework or operating behind the scenes in every CI endeavor. They engage actively in all phases of criminal investigations, from its inception to the prosecution stage. Among their diverse roles are:

Your role involves a broad array of responsibilities, such as researching, collecting, analyzing, and evaluating information to assist in uncovering violations of tax laws and supporting ongoing criminal investigations. These tasks may vary across assignments and can entail gathering, synthesizing, and scrutinizing data from diverse sources, verifying information accuracy, staying abreast and engaged in the investigation's progress to adapt search tactics as necessary, exploring multiple avenues of inquiry, and compiling comprehensive reports of findings to contribute to larger investigative endeavors.
Our administrative professionals play a crucial role in keeping CI operations running smoothly, ensuring financial resources are available, and equipment remains operational. Among their diverse roles are:

Our Technology Operations and Cyber and Forensic Services staff represent a diverse array of backgrounds, educational levels, and experiences, enriching our team with diverse perspectives and expertise. Their roles encompass a wide spectrum of innovative work, ranging from cybercrime investigations to data analytics and cyber security, among other technological domains.
To bolster our criminal investigations on both national and global scales, CI established the Digital Forensics Lab (DFL). The 11,000 square foot facility is in Woodbridge, Virginia, 25 miles south of CI Headquarters in the Metropolitan DC Area. The DFL supports criminal investigations through the forensic acquisition, preservation, investigative analysis, and reporting of digital and cyber evidence.
